Backyard Transformation
A bare, unused backyard rebuilt into a shaded patio, fire feature and lawn that gets used year round.
Concept project created to demonstrate scope, design thinking and deliverables. Not a photograph of a completed customer property.
The challenge
The yard was bare dirt and patchy grass with a small slab patio too small for furniture. Runoff from the roof crossed the middle of the yard, so nothing planted there survived and the space was unusable after rain.
Design approach
Anchor the space with a large flagstone patio off the house, cover part of it with a cedar pergola for afternoon shade, and set a fire pit at the far edge to pull people into the yard. Regrade first so water leaves the yard along a defined path, then rebuild the lawn and border beds around the hardscape.
What we built
Regraded the yard and tied roof downspouts into a buried line, installed a flagstone patio with a cedar pergola, built a masonry fire pit with a gravel surround, laid new sod, planted layered border beds, and finished with low-voltage uplighting and path lighting.
